‘Ethics’ – a small word hosting a profound meaning. Maintaining professional ethics is crucial for a company to expand and succeed. With millions of companies existing out there in the market, what differentiates your company from the rest is the way you treat others, including your employees and customers.
6 ways to improve ethics in the workplace are
1. Have a set of codes
The company should have a set of codes and values for guiding the employees. A detailed list of the code of conduct will help the employer to promote the kind of behaviours expected from the employees. Code of conduct varies from one company to another. The code of conduct should be an exhaustive list and should be in a written format. Instead of having generalised statements, the code of conduct should list down what is exactly to be done by the employees.
2. Build a sound department
Have a department implement the code of conduct and regularly check the behaviours and actions of the employees. This department will also be responsible for taking strict actions against violators. Establishing such a department will also show your employees that the company takes ethical issues seriously.
3. Train your employees
Your employees need to know and understand how they would be contributing towards the creation of an ethical workplace. For this, you need to train them regularly. Such training and workshop sessions are important for all the employees, irrespective of their designation. These sessions would be especially beneficial for leaders and managers who would be in charge of guiding different teams. The management should also take an active part in such workshops.
4. Be an example
Practice what you preach. Rather than having a series of books containing principles of ethics, lead your employees by being an example yourself. Follow all the codes of conduct and encourage your team leaders and managers to do the same. When the management takes ethics seriously and tries to incorporate it as a part and parcel of the workplace, employees will automatically follow them and behave in a way that aligns with their expected behaviours.
5. Reward employees
Companies can enhance the value and importance of ethics in the workplace by properly incentivising the employees who are sticking to the mentioned and documented code of conduct. However, merely having the system of rewarding the employees is not enough. Companies should communicate to the employees about the rewarding system so that all members across all the teams of the company are aware of the fact that their ethical actions and behaviours would be properly recognized and appreciated.
6. Call out unethical behaviours
Just like ethical behaviours should be rewarded and recognised, unethical behaviours should be immediately reported to the concerned authority responsible for ensuring ethics in the workplace. Employees should be encouraged to report ethical violations. However, companies should make sure that the identity of the complaint lodger remains concealed. Responsible and experienced staff should be assigned to investigate the matter and impose stringent measures to curb the violation.
