There is a common saying in the job market, “Employees don’t quit organizations, they quit managers.” This reveals that there is an underlying problem in the way leaders are playing their roles in different companies. The power of leaders or managers should not be underestimated. They can drive change and create the desired work culture.

Attrition refers to the process of losing employees. It can be Voluntary or Involuntary. Voluntary attrition is when an employee leaves an organization by his or her choice. Involuntary attrition happens when the employment of an individual is terminated by the management.

So, how can managers and leaders curb attrition?

Enhance work conditions:

Leaders should ensure that employees are provided an ergonomic workspace where they can deliver their best. With the rise of remote working today, employees should be allowed flexible working schedules. Attrition can only be lessened when employees love their job and get to work in an environment that is both mentally and physically comfortable.

Set realistic targets:

As an able manager, one should clearly specify the goals and targets to be achieved by the employees. This will give employees the much-needed clarity that will enable them to perform better. Once the expectations from them are specifically outlined, employees find it easier to focus and have greater chances of achieving their objectives.

Provide required tools:

Leaders should see to it that the team members have access to the required software and tools. When employees use progressive technology that makes their work easier and faster, they tend to experience a morale boost and try to get more work done. This increases the level of job satisfaction and reduces the employees’ urge to quit the organization.

Conduct developmental programs:

Leaders should make sure that the skill-sets of their employees evolve and develop continually. Opportunities should be created so that employees can learn new skills and improve their knowledge about new technologies. This will instill more confidence in them and enable them to perform better.

Acknowledge accomplishments with rewards:

Appropriate rewards and perks go a long way in motivating employees for their hard work and effort. Apart from suitable compensations, managers need to think about unique ways to reward their employees. In the present work from home scenarios, this can be done through things like gift vouchers or by sponsoring online courses as per the choice of the employees.

Communicate clearly:

Employees need to be heard and paid attention to on a regular basis. For this, managers may introduce feedback mechanisms in the form of regular polls or virtual meet-ups. This will give the employees a reliable platform to voice their opinions and report any issues that they might be encountering at the workplace. As a result, a bond of trust would develop between the employees and their managers.

Attrition is a natural process. It is a significant part of a company’s journey. However, good leadership can bring down a company’s attrition rate. By using the above strategies, leaders can try to retain the best talents.
