The strategies and the daily activities surrounding DEI are generally planned and implemented by the members of the HR team.
What is Diversity in the workplace?
Diversity in the workplace refers to having a workforce that comes from different backgrounds. Companies that have high levels of diversity perform better. The diversity amongst the employees might be related to their race, nationality, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical abilities, religion, etc.
What is Inclusion in the workplace?
Inclusion stands for acknowledging the opinions and the participation of every employee. It refers to how workers having different identities feel being a part of the company. Having a team of diverse talent might not always ensure absolute inclusion.
What is Equity in the workplace?
Equity ensures that all the workers have equal access to professional advancements and receive similar treatment. It provides fair opportunities for every employee to grow and succeed. It identifies and eliminates obstacles that hinder the equal participation of certain diverse groups.
Role of HR Managers:
HR managers play a significant role to create a diverse, fair, and inclusive workplace. They should:
- Select eligible candidates from multiple media so that a diverse job pool exists. Candidates should be –evaluated objectively and a standardized evaluation process is to be followed.
- Include diverse people from the company and set up the interview panel. Paying attention to the concerns and perspectives of various people will improve the quality and effectiveness of the hiring process.
- Attend training sessions and workshops to learn how to avoid unconscious biases during recruitment. They can also incorporate the practice of ‘Blind Hiring’ wherein candidates would be assessed based only on their education, qualifications, and experiences.
- Develop a proper inclusion strategy and ensure inclusion at all levels of the organization. The HR department should draft the vision and mission of the company reflecting its core inclusive values. Proper anti-discriminatory policies should be created and appropriately executed.
- Provide equal opportunities to all employees for their professional development. Equal treatment should be meted out to the entire workforce. Employees from all levels should have equal access to resources and benefits. Under no way can certain specific groups be allowed to acquire more benefit from the learning opportunities.
- Remove all sorts of pay inequities amongst the employees. Bonuses and appraisals should be awarded only to deserving candidates based on their performances.
- DEI reinforce each other. In a society, where segregation and separatism are on the rise, every step that is taken towards developing a diverse, just, and more inclusive workplace is important. Businesses are an integral part of society and by transforming one workplace at a time, HR managers can contribute to the creation of a better world.
