Networking is a continuous process. It needs goodwill, organization, attention, and persistence. In the words of Ivan Misner, a New York Times Bestselling Author and Founder of BNI,

“First, you have to be visible in the community. You have to get out there and connect with people. It’s not called net-sitting or net-eating. It’s called networking. You have to work at it.”

Networking aims at building strong, reliable relationships and a good network. If you can network properly, you can easily attract new opportunities, clients, customers, or partners. Moving out and meeting new people is simple. What you should know is how to meet the right people in the right way.

So, how can you network effectively and build everlasting relationships?

Here a few networking tips that you can try out:

Determine the networking style:

Before you start networking, choose the networking style that best suits your needs and personality. Try out different networking strategies and then select the most effective one. Once you know what your networking technique is, you can get in touch with the right people easily.

Stretch outside your zone:

Networking might not yield desirable results if you do it only within your circle. To become a successful networker, you need to move outside the box and look for networking opportunities elsewhere too. Start networking with people who share common personal and professional interests. You can also take up voluntary endeavors to look for career opportunities and develop your network.

Have the right gesture:

Networking doesn’t mean asking for jobs. At first, you should try and build meaningful rapport. This will help you earn a good name within your network. While networking, always allow the opposite person to express himself or herself. Be a good listener so that people can trust and depend on you.

Network virtually:

Be part of different business and professional groups online. Social media networks will help you keep up with industry trends. Recruiters often get in touch with potential candidates through social media platforms and online forums. Having a digital portfolio will also help you in networking better, especially if you are seeking employment.

Take care of your network:

Give the required attention to your professional network. Communicate regularly and introduce people of your network to one another. Always be eager to offer help and give suggestions to those who need it. Also, remember not to over-exploit your network.

Invest in follow up:

Many professionals undermine this important step in networking. After you have met someone new, make sure you continue the interaction through a preferred communication channel. You can use different social media platforms to reach out and offer valuable advice.

Networking is crucial when it comes to job search. Having the right employee referral will increase your chances of getting a job. A reliable network will help you find out relevant connections and leads in the job market. Networking in the workplace is also beneficial for your career progression. It plays an important role in the development of your career.
